I got scammed too. Not realizing there was a difference until too late. The scammers sent a notice for renewal (it looked official) prior to the official one by the US Coast Guard. I thought the US Coast Guard raised the rates for the documentation, which is not true, as I found out.
The scammers charge $75 for the service, while the US Coast Guard charges $26 for the real document. I tried to get my money back from the scammers, but they have no refund policy. I was furious with them. Don't be fooled by these lame scammers!!! Tim SV Sly Fox Essex Jct. I received something in mail from Transport Canada that I was not expecting. Upon opening it was the new certificate of registration. They issue one every three years. I did not even request it ? it just came automatically. The even better news is that they also did not require me to pay anything. Subject: Stus-List Vessel documentation renewal - those scammers again Well, gee. I just got my "courtesy" renewal notice from "Maritime Documentation Center". I promptly emailed them an "official notice of shame". :) For those who are new the list a while and haven't seen our derision at these folks, let me elaborate. The "Maritime Documentation Center" is NOT the US Coast Guard's Vessel Documentation Center (VDC). It is a third party entity who will gladly charge you three times the fee of the VDC for doing what you can do on the VDC's website in under 5 minutes. It's not illegal, just irritating. They simply send you an official looking courtesy notice for renewal. It may show up slightly before the USCG VDC's real renewal notice. Do not be fooled. The VDC fee for renewal is $26. Pay no more. The official VDC website is here: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Our-Organization/Deputy-for-Operations-Policy-and-C apabilities-DCO-D/National-Vessel-Documentation-Center/ Dennis C. I'm going to get a new dome and gasket from Viking for it, but I understand that they are out of the plastic rings that the compass sits under. The plastic ring I have is cracked and has 4 plastic mounts inside that you screw it into the holding mount with. 3 of those mounts are broken in my unit. So I'm trying to find spare parts... or an entire compass to scavenge parts from. Anybody have one laying around? I found one online at Dukes in Sausalito, CA but they want $150 for it... I'll probably get that one if no one here can help me. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <caabfp6rqeabb8ge0+us6jwmxgdqcyawzzbsvx5yow8zawdm...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Our cover attaches to the sides of the boom. Questions & Answers: (1) should the cover be fully up when dropping the sail or eased? Ours is fully up. (2) what kind of extension or line do people use on the zipper car? We have a rope about 3' long attached to the zipper pull so we can reach across the dodger, etc. (3) is it typical to have to "stuff" the sail into the cover before zipping? Or is my problem just a new stiff sail? A stiff new sail is definitely part of the problem, but we do have to pull back a bit on the main in a few places to get it to drop into the cradle a bit more sometimes. (4) can the mast cover be left in place when sailing, dropping the sail? We don't but our design is a bit different than yours as leaving this cover in place would make raising the main impossible. (5) is it better to let the sail drop quickly - letting go of the halyard - or easing it down? Ours works best if we drop it all at once, and even better if it is flapping a bit as it falls. This is what our cover looks like when the jack lines are brought to the mast (usually to the horns but not in this photo) and the cover is rolled up along the side of the boom and fastened down with the little straps built in for this. We only do this if we will be out for hours. https://photos.app.goo.gl/5R8tdl5V2ZU19NJl2 Ken H.
