You might be surprised about winter solar performance. I'm in BC, and my
brother's place on the gulf islands just got a 4kW solar system installed,
with 900W of panels. The standby consumption of the inverter is about 10W
(not bad considering the 4kW output). But what I was most surprised was
that we were seeing 100W of power from the panels even during the days of
full cloud cover and heavy rain in early September. I would assume the
small 12V fan in a toilet will draw less than 1W, and if you have an
efficient solar inverter/charging system, it may not be a problem even in
the dark days of winter.
When we do find a boat, I'll definitely be investigating a composting
toilet, along with a solar system.
