Hi Lee, I sail the same boat on Lake Huron/North Channel and went through the
same thoughts 2 years ago when I replaced my main. After much thought I opted
for the second reef. So far I haven’t had occasion to use the second reef yet
but I had it put in for peace of mind if nothing else as the lake can blow
sometimes. Unfortunately I don’t remember where the first and second reefs are
but it seems to me the first reef may not be as deep as it would have been if I
had only one reef point so that may add some flexibility. The boats original
main that I replaced had two reef points.

I have a 33MKII and all my mainsails have a single reef point.

I do have two reefing lines in my boom so I can accommodate a second reef and
am thinking of having one installed.

My questions are:

1.. Do other 33MKII have as second reef?
  2.. Are they beneficial?
3.. Where on the mainsail is the upper reef?

I race on Lake Michigan and we have had some nasty winds the last two years.

Thanks,

Lee Rosenbaum
