Derek, The typical recommendation is to use a Racor filter of a larger pore size (30 or 10 micron) to act as a pre-filter to the engine filter (2 micron). Most of the racor housings that you will find are rated at many times the required flow rate (15 gpm VS 1 gpm) and as such a smaller pore size will actually ensure that the engine filter NEVER needs changed. This is important since the bleed screws on these filter housings are notorious for getting stripped or just simply leaking.
Here is a video I made to share how easily I vent my system. The guides and manuals provide fool proof means for venting the system. Unfortunately this can also lead to a lot of unneeded work and the potential to cause leaks - both fuel and air. https://youtu.be/F7KD1_EZmU4 Adding a vacuum gage to the racor gives indication of a clog and also reduces the inclination to change the filter unnecessarily. This video also shows a mod that allows easy venting of the racor. https://youtu.be/H-GI38vE4hQ Biobor is fine but eliminating the source of water in the tank is important too. Some water actually comes from the dockside fuel pump. I keep the fuel fresh by keeping a low-ish tank volume and filling only 5 or 10 gallons at a time. I always use a filter funnel that strips water from the fuel. As someone else described, you can rig a 12v pump to recirc the tank contents through the racor - I like to do this before changing the filter. In addition you can recirc the tank through the filter funnel to not just polish in the racor but also strip water. BTW, the levers to which you refered are not the injectors as you misstated. They are actually the decompression levers. The hold open the cylinder valves so that it is impossible for the engine to create compression. This is a great way to circulate oil to the bearings in the off season. It is also a great way to pre-lube the engine prior to start. In an emergency you can use these to shutdown the engine. As you described I also use them to "prime" the engine immediately after a fuel bleed. Be care anytime that you turn the engine over without actually achieving ignition to avoid the risk of hydro-lock that was described in the video you shared. FWIW, I've never had a fouled fuel issue, clogged filter, or signs of water or gunk in the fuel. I don't use Biobor and I only change the filter if it shows elevated differential pressure (going on 5 years). My biggest recurring problem is air leaking into the racor bowl. One venting before and one during the season is usually enough. I do use a lubricity additive Opti-lube XPD. https://opti-lube.com/diesel-fuel-improver/xpd-diesel-fuel-additives.html Josh Muckley S/V Sea Hawk 1989 C&C 37+ Solomons, MD On Tue, Oct 22, 2019, 1:52 PM Derek McLeod via CnC-List < [email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > > This video was very helpful to get the air bled out of the system.
