It sounds like he did not use enough Vaseline (I hate when that happens). The
bond is probably not permanent, but as I reported not too long ago, the first
time it “lets go” can be a real nail-biter.

Also, when I made a Spar-tite plug for my 34, I discovered that the collar had
one or two holes (possibly to run a bolt through the collar and into the mast,
which I wasn’t using). I taped off the outside of the hole when I poured the
plug, and the Spar-tite naturally found and filled the void. This created a
real problem removing the plug from the collar. In my case I drilled the
Spar-tite out of the hole(s) – careful not to go into the mast -- and the
problem was solved. Irregularities with the shape of the inside surface of the
collar can create a similar problem.

I removed my collar so I could have it refinished. While it was out I checked
for core but found solid fiberglass. I bedded it with butyl and have had no
problems. I'm not a die hard fan of butyl and in some cases I think it leaves
much to be desired - Not in this case.

Jake Broaderson on Midnight Mistress used the pourable mast seal (the name is
escaping me - spar-tite?) He said that it had created a permanent bond between
the collar and the mast. The only way to remove the mast was to now unbolt and
remove the collar!

The mast collar on Imzadi has been in place for 44 years. The only
modifications/work done on it has been to drill 4 #10 size holes near the
periphery so rain water can leak out onto the deck and no longer gets
trapped inside the raised part of the collar.

I can't imagine any reason you would ever want to remove a mast collar.
