I had to remove the PO's name on the transom as well....it was also painted on....it took a few hours....I used a 3M rubbing compound on a rotating polisher....before I started, I taped all the surrounding gelcoat and inside the lettering so as not to take off that gelcoat, just the painted lettering.  It worked out fine.

Just curious, where do you keep your boat in Halifax?
