Two great tips - I’ll add - and chuck previously wrote up something similar on 
apparently free running sheaves binding under load.

My harken furler would sometimes jam under load. The halyard wasn’t wrapping, 
the top swivel would spin quite freely when checked, and I was dumbfounded.  
This was a dangerous problem as I singlehand a lot and it seemed to bind at 
really inopportune times.

For whatever reason it occurred to me to 
seriously clean, flush and lube the swivel.   I was surprised to see a 
significant improvement.   35 years old and the thing now spins as if 
frictionless.  
Haven’t had a problem since.
