Richard, on my 38MKII, I did remove the Dorado boxes themselves.....there is a hole in your cabin ceiling under one end of the box. 

The Marinco solar vents work great and have a nice smooth stainless cover on deck.

 

We did mine about 5 years ago and they work and look great.

Richard I replaced both cowl vents with stainless low profile vents.   Looks great till you lose one.  Had s/s guards fabricated and have not one since then.

I have found that the best solution is to remove the vents when sailing; they are easy enough to stow when under way, and can be placed when at the the dock;

My 85 37 has the traditional cowl vents on the dorade boxes. Jib sheet caught one and tossed it in the drink yesterday, motivating me to upgrade to a low profile vent that will fit the 7” space. Nicro and Marinco make a nice mini solar vent that will fit, but I think these are designed for direct thru-deck application, not a dorade box.

What solutions have you folks found for a low profile vent?
