On Persistence we installed Spartite collar 4 seasons ago. It is FANTASTIC!
For the previous 8 seasons we used wedges. There was very little room between the collar and vang/blocks on mast for installing these so always a pain. Even larger pain to get a boot over everything and pray to the higher ups that it would not leak. Often was a month into the season before leaks stopped With Spartite after we stepped the mast we then used wedges as normal to get the mast where we wanted it. Then at the advice of someone who had done this many times we used lines around base of mast in all directions to hold the mast in place after wedges were removed. Next step was to liberally spread Vaseline on mast inside collar and on mast collar itself. After that was fairly simple …. Build the dam using plasticine and pour in the mix. Have not had a leak since. When we un-step mast each year has never been an issue. No “popping” out of the hole. Suspect application of petroleum jelly each year might also make it even less. Each year stepping the mast has not presented any problems. Takes no longer than before and not having to put wedges in place each year and install a boot saves a lot of time after. I cannot recommend this more highly. Should have done it much sooner!
