If you go the Spartite route, make absolutely certain the inside of the 
partners deck “ring” on the boat is 100% smooth with no ridges.  I put in 
Spartite 20+ years ago and did not notice a slight ridge [< 1/8”] in the inside 
circumference [wider at the bottom and narrower at the top] which when pulling 
the mast the first time would not release.  The boat was actually lifted 6”+ 
out of the water before the crane operator stopped.  Had to unbolt the AL deck 
ring to pull the mast, then pound the Spartite / deck ring off the mast, then 
grind down the ridge.  Was flawless for subsequent pulling of the mast.  And 
make certain to reapply your lubricant of choice [Vaseline / KY, whatever] 
before stepping the mast.  The Spartite needs to be covered to protect it from 
UV degradation.
