Yes what you describe is the setup on my boat too. Wow, yeah I have never seen 
water come up to the top of the cable sheave in the deck!  C&C probably didn't 
expect you to use the bottom of the keel as a plow! Must be creating a pump 
like effect in the centerboard trunk. That sounds rather scary on the "am I 
going to just get stuck here" front...

A lot of boats (Pearsons for example) have a cable exit in the cockpit just 
slightly above the water line.
