Nina looks gorgeous. If she were here, we would pay a visit for sure 😊

I concur with Richard on the use of AwlGrip.

In 2017 I sanded Nina’s deck down to gelcoat (and in some spots to fiberglass)
and removed all hardware. Around that time I met an older gentleman who had
worked at Rybovich in West Palm Beach. I asked what he would charge to prime
and paint the deck — he said $15/hour if I bought the materials. I hired him
immediately.

He recommended AwlGrip, and over about five weeks (5 days a week, 8–4) he
roll-and-tipped the entire deck. The result was excellent — and he taught me
the technique along the way.

I later used the same approach during a 2022 haul-out when I did a full bottom
job and hull color change. That included six weeks of sanding the bottom back
to gelcoat to remove roughly 15 layers of paint since 1980. (Fun in hindsight…
maybe not so much at the time!)

Fast forward to today — the deck still presents well. There are minor signs of
age in a few areas, but it has held up impressively. I’ve done occasional
touch-ups, and after a recent pressure wash she still cleans up beautifully.

One additional note: I highly recommend SoftSand as a non-skid additive in key
deck areas. It provides a secure, comfortable feel — especially barefoot.

Randy; in 2023-24 I had my topsides repaired from damage inflicted by another
boat; (long story); after considerable research, the shop went with Awl Grip;
(mostly because my boat has been painted with Awl Grip previously); the cost
was in the low $20's; however, that included the repairs to the hull; I have
photos if you wish; its only been two years, but I am very pleased with how the
job has held up; from my recollection, to keep it looking good over the long
haul, you would need to get back to gelcoat, (or as in my case, remove and
apply new gelcoat)...$$$ and time!
the results, however, will get you lots of compliments! Let me know if you need
any more; thanks!

Hello Listers,

I’m appealing for the list’s wisdom on this subject.

Grenadine was painted 7.5 years ago with red Interlux Brightside, three or four
coats rolled and tipped, successively thinned and wet sanded with each coat.
She looked fantastic!

But the paint has oxidized noticeably over the last couple years in the
high-altitude sun, despite the fact that I wax her every spring, sometimes
twice a year, and she’s in the shade on the hard every winter.

I’m not ready to spring for a new paint job yet, but I am willing to attempt a
multi-step restoration job involving cutting compound, etc. I have random
orbit dual-action polishers at my disposal, and crew to help.

What I’d like to know is whether anyone can recommend good products and
processes to get her back to that newly-painted look.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford
