well, don't throw it to trash, but probably the users list would be more
helpful here..

-> take a serial cable (null-modem pinout) and restart the qube.
if you get output on the serial-interface (I guess it's 11500,8,n,1)
you will get at the and a console-login. if it shows nothing there's
some trick to press a keypad or key on the q3-back then it will init
the serial next time it boots as console.

you can also always try to read the manual where above is printed ;-)

finally: if nothing helps take the HDDs out and check the content
by mounting the disks in another box.

i know 800 miles are probably annoying here, but if it's defective,
it simply is, bad luck.
