Have you tried either getting a GD RPM or the GD source and compiling it? I've installed php-4.3 or whatever release on our RaQ4's here without problems, there is a basic howto on my site below. Try re-compiling/make/make install'ing GD and this may solve the problem though. Don't forget to ldconfig afterwards.
