Thanks for the in depth choices when it comes to possible alternatives
keeping to the Cobalt style Gui.
However therein begs the question - this is all based on the cobalt
stuff - i guess no real additional functionality built in?? And still with
the
problems of installing using packages ( rather from command line and then
it not being useable across all sites i guess).
Anyone any actual alternatives, as opposed to clones??
(that will enable me to weigh up my options..)
Really all i want to be able to do is setup & administer sites, and really
not tie myself to .pkg's but to allow installs across whatever
interface i end up using to the virtual sites contained within...
Thx

Greetings Paul,
There are a few Raq 550 clones aroung
www.raqdevil.com based on FreeBSD
www.bluequartz.org based on Fedora core (redhat linux)
http://www.nuonce.net based on centOS
there are others but depends on what you want
I have been testing the RAQDEVIL for the last few months and it's
production
release is due shortly.
check the web site and see how far along is has progressed.
I also tested Bluequartz, but found it a bit under supported except in
Japanese (where there is lots of Documentation)
Nuonce seems like they have a big following but then again this is with
LINUX, and if you check the cobaltfaqs you see there are lots of people
using it,
But Nuonce charges for packages and stuff I do not know how you can
charge
for free software but they do.....
I am sure you will get a large response from Nuonce since they are a
commercial outfit $
What is important is if you are a devoloper and want to make Raq 55o
better
not just a clone, then Raqdevil may be a good start. Devon O'Dell is
working
close to SUN and he is very active with the Dtrace project and his spare
time is devoted to the Raqdevil Project.... that is very positive.
I am sure if you have a commercial need then you should consider what is
important for you... I hope this was helpful.

Subject: [cobaltfacts] [OT] Upgrades...
Guys,
Have been running a couple of small sites on a Raq 4i (550 OS) for a few
years now, and the time has come to think about upgrading. I've recently
come across a couple of P3/800Mhz Dual processor IBM boxes (They were
free..!), and figure as they have come with a Dat auto loader, i'd be
best off using them!
Looking at possible alternative Os's and front ends (Keeping with Linux
of course..). Only a couple of simple stipulations:
1. they need to be free - Direct Admin / plesk / cpanel all look great,
but unfortunately they cost.
2. they must be easily installable/maintainable - i.e. easy to
install/update virus checkers/mailscanner etc etc
Now i was thinking along the Centos/Bluequartz road, but not had too
much experience with it - problem is that it seems to me that as it's
based on the old bluequartz/cobalt "interface" it's not as "up to date"
as it is...Was thinking something along the lines of a fresh start with
a new interface, along with improved functionality??
Any thoughts would be appreciated :)
Thx
Paul

The cent o/s / BQ (best bang for the buck) can use yum to install/upgrade
any program and dependents it may need. Slick as shit!
We have 550's raq2-3-4's ect. and I think this is the best solution for the
existing cobalt operator. (at least cost wise)
We use one to filter mail and it works great so far. It's a older Dell
Optiplex GX1.
