I've gone through those already, but I might have missed things. I'll
re-read...

I looked for the .discinfo and found out that CentOS-2.1 doesn't have
any. This was probably what has caused the error - I was trying an
import of all current install trees for CentOS. Anyway, I read both in
the manpage and on the Wiki that import is only a shortcut, so I have
started adding repos - as I need to add updates repos and additional
repos (EPEL, etc.) this just makes it more "uniform".

Thanks for the clarification.

However, this wouldn't work directly, because the current templates
assume "url --url=$tree" while kickstarting with a NFS source requires
"nfs --server=nfsserver.example.com --dir=/tmp/install-tree".

Exactly. I was tricked into thinking that --available-as would cover
that, maybe because the syntax is the same.

As I have mentioned before, the extra magic could also be limited to
adding a line to /etc/fstab with "noauto" - this would require a
'mount' before any 'yum update' and an 'umount' afterwards, but with
func this is not a problem... this is what I do already. I do realize
though that not everyone wants to use func, so the more general
automounting would fit better; I just wanted to provide a real-world
usage alternative.

What you have proposed seems fine to me. Unfortunately I don't have
any time to dedicate to cobbler development, but I would be able to
test patches or development versions - please keep in mind that I use
CentOS 5 as a cobbler server, if that makes any difference.
