Thanks. I will bear this solution in mind. To be honest, I'm currently deferring tackling automating anything to do with the boot server config until other things shape up. For now I've whacked it all into a git repo. As Michael says, doing it with execs seems likely to be fragile, although arguably easier than writing a Puppet type/provider. Another approach might be to write a Python script which sets cobbler up according to some config file and invoking that via Puppet.
