Diane Luck and I were rewarded at the end of a one mile snowshoe (and 500' elevation gain) with a close look at a Three-toed Woodpecker. We snowshoed (we could of hiked) a trail up Cascade Creek off the Pikes Peak Highway ($4 toll each). After our climb up, we were having a snack and resting in the nice warm sun and heard the bird working a tree on the east side of the large meadow. The forest was thick and it took some diligent searching but were rewarded with great looks from less than twenty feet (gps coordinates: 38.89244 N, 105.00652 W). Other birds of note: Clark's Nutcracker, Gray Jay, and Northern Shrike (!) working the edge of the meadow, elevation 8800'. It seemed high and out of place in the montane habitat, but was hunting actively. Anybody know the altitude record for Northern Shrike? Good birdin' to you Dave David Elwonger, who roosts at 6200' in Skyway in SW Colorado Springs
