After working on conservation issues in the Trinidad area, I only had a short time to do some birding so detoured to Lake Maria which is east of Walsenburg. As the sun had gone down behind the nearby mountains it was difficult to identify the many ducks on this private lake. I spotted 4 swans, 3 of which appeared to be adults and 1 in immature plumage. I was scoping from the roadside on the se corner of the lake and they were on the sw side of the lake so I couldn't further identify them. I did check and a Nov 30 post noted 2 adult and 1 juv Trumpeter Swans in this location.
Lake Trinidad, just east of the city by the same name, had an adult Tundra Swan swimming with a juvenile swan (likely a Tundra as it was with the adult Tundra, but it was swimming away in the photo so I couldn't confirm it's ID) sometime earlier this month. I stopped there on my way back into Colorado on Jan 11 but the only birds on the lake then were 3 Common Goldeneye.
