While not related to the reduction in passerines on the CBC's, a number of neotropical migrants that either migrate through Colorado or nest here including Bobolinks are suffering declines as they are "highly susceptible to the toxic effects of the chemicals used on their wintering grounds in Central America and South America". Many of the out-of-season fruits and vegetables in our markets come from the countries that use restricted pesticides that are not allowed in the United States. By buying in-season fruits and vegetables we can help these birds and reduce our countries dependence on the large amount of foreign oil it takes to transport these items thousands of miles to our markets as well as reduce the carbon going into the atmosphere.
The National Wildlife Federation has an informative report on this issue and the actions we can take to help the birds we enjoy in Colorado from spring to fall.
