Dear Cobirders,
This morning (2/4/09) at Stearn's Lake among the Cackling and Canada
Geese, I managed to relocate three Blue morph Snow Geese, one white
morph Snow Goose, one Greater White-fronted Goose and two odd looking
geese. Both odd looking Geese were hanging out together with one
having more white on it's head than the other. Both Geese lacked a
grin patch and had small gray bills. The Goose with the whiter head
had a steeper crown-bill transition along with a more rounded culmen,
these characteristics together with a size closer to the Cackling
Geese than the Snow Geese suggests immature Ross's Goose to me. The
second odd Goose was the same size as the first and had a very sooty
head, a more continuous crown-bill transition and a straighter
culmen. Neither bird had very white coverts, so who knows what they
are.

Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
