Hi all, I visited Big Johnson Resv. before the front arrived this morning. Wow- what a difference a "little wind" can make. Last Thursday the lake was about 5% open. Today, 100%! Everything was scattered towards the north side of the lake (of course), probably 150+ mixed diving ducks and mergansers. Few geese or gulls.
One male Barrow's Goldeneye was seen, plus several Common Goldeneye, Hooded and Com Merganser, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Ducks, N. Pintail, Mallard, N. Shoveler, Gadwall, several Canada Geese and Ring- billed Gulls, and a Horned Lark. (and it wasn't windy!) The front was beginning to arrive as I left, so we'll see what the colder air does to the lake surface as the week progresses.
