Colorado birders

Please note below the announcement of the 1st annual Red Slough birding
festival in southeast Oklahoma. For those not all that familiar with
the area, the birding sites below will result in one heckuva trip list.
LIttle River NWR has a good population of breeding Swainson's Warbler
among many other breeding warbler species and obviously given the
location and timing migrating warblers will be abundant. Red Slough
rivals Quivira and Cheyenne Bottoms as a major wetland and also has
southeastern breeding specialists such as Purple Gallinule, White Ibis
and Anhinga. And the McCurtain Co. Wilderness area lying in the
beautiful Ouachita mountain range has breeding Red-cockaded Woodpecker,
Bachman's Sparrow and Brown-headed Nuthatch. A two-day Wichita (KS)
Audubon trip to this area in the 2d week of May back in the late 1990's
produced a trip list of nearly 200 species including over 25 warbler
species, all in McCurtain County. This is a home-grown event with all
the local avid birders helping out that know the place like the back of
their hands. Whatever they are asking price-wise is going to be a
bargain. Anyway they wanted the word spread around a bit so there you
have it.

The 1st annual Red Slough Birding Convention (McCurtain Co., OK) will be
May 7 through 10 and will feature butterflies, dragonflies, and
wildflowers as well as birds. It will involve other areas in the county
besides Red Slough such as the Little River NWR, McCurtain County
Wilderness Area, and a local Prairie Glade. Our Keynote speaker will be
Dennis Paulson from Seattle. We also will have Dr. Mia Revels, Matt
White, and John Fisher as speakers. There will be numerous tours
everyday going to various locations. There will be a one time trip only
to the McCurtain County Wilderness Area on Sunday morning with a limit
on group size so hurry and sign up to make this one. All the
information on the convention can be found at the following website:
www.redsloughconvention.com <http://www.redsloughconvention.com/> .
Check back from time to time for updates. Thanks to the Idabel Chamber
of Commerce for doing such a good job of organizing this event!
