Our Denver Audubon Beginning Bird Class spent this morning at the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt. Thanks to Warren Finch's posting last week, we found the Cooper's Hawks on their nest. First one, then an exchange, the female perching about 30 feet away. What fun for this group of 20 beginning & intermediate birders.
Harris's Sparrow: From the main Prospect Park parking lot, about 100 feet along the trail on the north side of Clear Creek, a patch of bushes had five sparrow typec: Spotted Towhee, Song, Chipping, White-crowned, and Harris's Sparrow. The Harris's sang its jumble of sweet whistles and other notes and sat at the top of a bush for 10 minutes or so -- the class could ID it from their Field Guides. Lots of ducks, singing American Goldfinches, a Great Blue Heron nest at the top of each tree on the island with dozens of cormorant nests below.
