This morning, I spotted on the opposite shore at least 15 American Avocets in breeding plumage. Panning left, I counted at least the same number of California Gulls, and farthest of all were the Western Grebes, in the northwest sector of the reservoir near the construction area. These were so distant that I had to take it on faith, based on yesterday's report, that they were Westerns and not Clark's. The gulls and western grebes are lifebirds for me, as was yesterday's sighting of the eared grebes. The rest, of course, were coots, scaup, shovelers, ruddies, gadwalls, and ring-necks.
