How's that for a name? In years gone by it has been know as "Ball
Brothers Grove" or at least part of that grove since for the most part
"Ball Brothers" is not longer open.

However, there is still a rich and open to the public area along Boulder
Creek just west of 55th St. It is decent birding at any season, but
spring and fall migrations bring the promise of special treats. The
area is a dense riparian section along Boulder Creek with a loop trail
around a marshy area going to the south. Resident birds present today
included House Wren, Song Sparrow, American Robin, American Goldfinch,
Red-winged Blackbird and Brown-headed Cowbird. I sure indicator that
they aren't here yet was the fact that no Yellow Warblers were heard as
this is prime nesting habitat. Migrants and transients observed today
included Lark Sparrow, Turkey Vulture, American Dipper several
Orange-crowned Warblers, abundant Yellow-rumped Warblers, one Western
Tanager and one Bullock's Oriole.

To access it, park at the Humane Society of Boulder County on the west
side of 55th Street between Arapahoe and East Pearl and head west toward
the creek. For the best habitat follow the creek upstream and keep to
the right, then follow the trail to the left. If you head back even
further through the woods you will come to a City of Boulder "Open"
Space fence that marks the beginning of the closed area, but you can
follow along the fence line for good views into some dense riparian
habitat. While there you are likely to encounter Humane Society
volunteers exercising dogs. I would be remiss not to point out that
these pleasant volunteers do a great job of keeping the area "clean" and
trash free.

The bottom line here is that this place is likely to be productive in
any upslope fallout in the next few weeks. I can't see why it wouldn't
be as or more productive than areas like the CU Campus section of
Boulder Creek at 17th St. or Sale Lake.
