Hello, Birders.

Andrew and I visited Crow Valley Campground, Weld County, earlier today,
Thursday, May 14th. Although the warblers weren't quite "dripping from the
trees," we nonetheless found a bunch of nice birds up there. Highlights:

1 or 2 female Hooded Warblers. Constantly in view, it seemed, and fairly
wide-ranging; that's why I wonder if there could have been 2. Well, we never
saw 2 at once, so call it 1 for sure.

1 singing male Blackpoll Warbler. We bumped into another birder who reported a
female.

1 singing male Townsend's Warbler. This species is rare in eastern Colorado in
the spring.

At least 5 White-throated Sparrows. A dull tan-morph, a bright tan-morph, a
bright white-morph, and two dull white-morphs.

1 Lesser Goldfinch. Used to be, these were rare on the plains; but the times,
they are a-changin'.

Other stuff we observed out there: 1 Least Flycatcher, 1 Hammond's Flycatcher,
1 Loggerhead Shrike, 2 Warbling Vireos, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 20+
Swainson's Thrushes, 5 Hermit Thrushes, 5 Northern Mockingbirds, 1
MacGillivray's Warbler, 1 Yellow-breasted Chat, 3 Green-tailed Towhees, 2
Lincoln's Sparrows, and 3 Pine Siskins. Also: Dusky Flycatchers, Eastern
Kingbirds, Blue Jays galore, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Gray Catbirds, Brown
Thrashers, Western Tanagers, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Bullock's Orioles.

Lotsa other birders out there, which was nice to see. We bumped into folks who
reported seeing some good'ns that we did not: Eastern Screech-Owl, Veery,
Yellow-throated Warbler (!), Northern Waterthrush, and the aforementioned
female Blackpoll.

Andrew brought his trowel and dug several pits near the trails, so watch your
step next time you're out there.

We stopped briefly near CR 65, where we saw a Burrowing Owl, a Willet, 2 Golden
Eagles, and gazillions of Lark Buntings.

And down at Barbour State Park, on the drive back toward Boulder County, we saw
a Forster's Tern.
