Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas volunteers and prospective volunteers are invited to a Region 13 blockbuster in the Mount Massive-SE atlas block May 29-31, 2009. The block is approximately 10 miles southwest of Leadville in the San Isabel National Forest. Camping is available in the block, and lodging is available in nearby Leadville. The Halfmoon and Elbert Creek national forest campgrounds have 39 campsites between them. The campgrounds have picnic tables, water and restrooms. Altitudes in the block range from about 9900 feet to above 13,000 feet. During Atlas I, 31 species were found including Spotted Sandpiper, Olive-sided and Dusky Flycatcher, Gray Jay, Townsend’s Solitaire, Yellow-rumped and Wilson’s Warbler, Lincoln’s and White-crowned Sparrow, and Pine Grosbeak. Plan to arrive Friday night for an early start Saturday, or join us Saturday morning. For those who arrive Friday evening, we’ll spend some time reviewing Empidonax flycatcher songs in hopes of adding to the flycatcher list for the block. We may also do some owling if time permits. Saturday morning, we’ll spend a little time reviewing atlas protocols if needed, then disperse to cover as many habitats as possible. Some Lodgepole Pines in the forest have been hit by bark beetles while others are not yet infected or have not yet died from the infestations. It should be interesting to see if woodpeckers have moved into the areas of dead pines. We’ll regroup in the afternoon, compare notes and swap stories over dinner. There will be an owling option for diehards, then an early start Sunday for another mourning of atlasing. Because of the altitude, many of the birds will be in the early stages of the breeding cycle. This will be an excellent chance to work on our song identification skills, and look for early cycle behaviors like courtship, territorial displays, and nest building. If you’d like more information or if you plan to join us, please contact.
