May 27, 2009 I meant to send this yesterday evening, but my Internet was out all evening. Anyway... A friend and I birded Fountain Creek Nature Center and Fountain Creek Regional Park on Memorial Day Monday (7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.). It was a great morning. In my opinion, our best bird was the Great Egret, and a first for me; although, the adorable goslings came in a close second - they weren't more than a day old, all fuzzy yellow and bobbing very closely around their mother. Here is a complete list: American White Pelican (two) Great Blue Heron Great Egret Green Heron Canada Geese Wood Ducks Mallards Blue Winged Teal Green Winged Teal Turkey Vulture Red-Tailed Hawk Killdeer Mourning Dove Eurasian Collared-Dove Belted Kingfisher Broad-tailed Hummingbird Northern Flicker Downy Woodpecker Western Wood-Pewee Western Kingbird Warbling Vireo Northern Rough-winged Swallow Barn Swallow White-breasted Nuthatch House Wren American Robin Swainson's Thrush European Starling Yellow Warbler American Tree Sparrow Bullock's Oriole Red-winged Blackbird Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird House Finch American Goldfinch Heard, but not seen Black-capped Chickadee Meadowlark Also seen: Rabbits (adult and baby); Squirrel (including black one, but not an Abert's); Muskrat; Bullfrog; Painted Turtle; Snapping Turtle (huge!) All in all, a glorious way to spend a Monday morning! Christine A.
