Hello, Birders. Maggie Boswell stopped by the house yesterday, and I lamented to her that, as usual, the penstemons had bloomed far too early to be useful. Useful, as in blooming so as to coincide with the mid-summer passage of Calliope, Rufous, and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds through Lafayette and elsewhere in eastern Boulder County. "Why don't you deadhead them?" she suggested. That way, they'll flower again, in time for all the hummers in July and August. Sounded like a good idea to me, so, late this afternoon, Wednesday, June 3rd, Andrew and I cut off all the flowers. (I felt like Morticia in the Addams Family.) Well, no sooner had we done the deed than did a Black-chinned Hummingbird fly in, perch on the nearby maple tree, complain about what we had done, and proceed to fly away. I'd never before seen the species around the house or anywhere else in Lafayette. Black-chinned is an uncommon (although probably underdetected) hummingbird species in Boulder County. This was only my 2nd sighting of the species in the county. I wish Maggie had come a day later... :-) Ted Floyd [email protected] Lafayette, Boulder County, Colorado ------------------------------- Ted Floyd Editor, Birding ------------------------------- Please support the American Birding Association: Click on http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=884482 to search the internet.
