Hello, Birders.

Hannah and I were out at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, earlier this
evening, Wednesday, June 3rd. There was a nice flock of aerial insectivores
hawking for insects right over the surface of Greenlee Reservoir: 20+ Cliff
Swallows, several Barn and Violet-green Swallows, a few Chimney Swifts, and...a
somewhat larger bird. No, it wasn't a Say's Phoebe, or a Common Nighthawk, or a
Black Swift--birds that sometimes join in with flocks of flycatching swallows.

Rather, it was--wait for it--a Red-necked Phalarope.

That's right, a male Red-necked Phalarope flying around in crazy, swallow-like
zigzags, seemingly completely in its element with all those swallows and the
few swifts. The phalarope did land on the water very briefly (~1 second),
looked around, looked confused, and then got right back up and started zooming
around with the swallows and swifts again.

As Reggie Jackson used to say, Who'da thunk?

We also spent a whole lot of time with one mean snapping turtle.
