While sitting outside reading a book this afternoon, I was surprised to hear
the gentle klip-klip....klip-klip.. of a Type 4 (Douglas-fir) Red Crossbill as
it flew over my house off Baseline Rd in south Boulder. Plenty of cone-bearing
trees in the area. I suspect that there was a minor irruption of this type into
the foothills this winter and this one is still lingering. I'm sure that by now
there are no Douglas-fir seeds left for it to eat, and perhaps it's turning to
these urban spruce trees, etc., for sustenance. In the winter I've had flocks
of Type 2's in some large spruces outside my house, but never in June, although
Type 2's are common in the foothills right now. I hear mobile groups every day
and the males are singing up a storm.
On an aside, the Northern Parula that I found yesterday was not detected today.
