Dear Cobirders,
I woke up incredibly early this morning to do my annual Nightjar
Survey along the road(s) from Mt. Sanitas to Gold Hill in Boulder
County. My first stop at the newly renovated Mt. Sanitas trailhead
immediately yielded a calling Long-eared Owl. There were 4 times as
many Nightjars this year as compared with last; I literally had 1
Common Nighthawk last year, but this year I had 3 Common Nighthawks
and 1 Common Poorwill. Other highlights include my first Black Bear
in Colorado at the intersection of Fourmile Canyon Dr. and Gold Run
Rd. and a friendly family of Foxes that wanted to know what I was
listening to, and refused to leave! On the way back down from the
foothills, I stopped by Gregory Canyon. I kid you not, the Kentucky
Warbler sang for one minute at 6:15 this morning and then didn't make
a sound afterwards. A nearby MacGillivray's Warbler did essentially
the same thing, singing for about 2 minutes before stopping. I waited
until 7:00 AM, before I decided the Kentucky Warbler mustn't be in the
mood to sing.

Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
