Hello, Birders.

I observed the following yesterday, Sunday, July 12th, in Boulder County:

At Prince Lake No. 2, with Hannah and Andrew, 1 singing male Dickcissel. The
bird was in the most-perfect-looking patch of Dickcissel habitat I've ever seen
in Boulder County--an extensive patch of flowering alfalfa with an especially
trashy aspect about it. To get to the bird, go north along 111th Street just a
little ways north of Prince Lake No. 2, and look for the big patch of flowering
alfalfa on the right (east) side of the road. There were 2 Great Egrets at the
lake proper.

At the Gun Barrel Open Space, straddling Lookout Road, 1 juvenile Burrowing Owl
and at least 5 Grasshopper Sparrows. The Burrowing Owl was just north of
Lookout Road, at the high point (elevation, 5400 feet) between 79th and 95th
Streets. The sparrows were all on the south side of the Lookout Road, right
along the road. You don't even have to get out of your car or get off your bike.

At the White Rocks Crossing north of Teller Farms, with Hannah, no Little Blue
Heron that I could see, but we did see 1 Snowy Egret, 1 Great Egret, and 2
Great Blue Herons. Also 1 honking big, nice-and-shiny adult male Great-tailed
Grackle.

At Walden Ponds, water, water everywhere, and mosquitoes to boot. I think of
myself as reasonably tolerant of mosquitoes, but this was ridiculous. The place
is unbirdable. I did see a hen Wood Duck with 8 young before I was chased out
by the mosquitoes.

Ah. July in Colorado. A great time of year for birding. I'm aware of the
following, just in Boulder County, these first 2 weeks (not quite) of July
2009: Wood Duck, Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, Green Heron, Northern
Goshawk, Burrowing Owl, breeding Black-chinned Hummingbird, probable
Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Black Swift, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Least
Flycatcher, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Parula, Ovenbird, Kentucky Warbler,
Hooded Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Cassin's Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Fox
Sparrow, Dickcissel, Bobolink, Great-tailed Grackle, and Red Crossbill.

It's a great time of year to go out and find stuff!
