Norma & Cobirders
I was at the Fawn Brook (Boulder County) late yesterday afternoon. There were
lots of feeders and plenty of hummingbirds. I observed something I've never
seen before, separate feeding locations used by male and female Broad-tailed
Hummingbirds. At the feeders at the front of the building, about 20
Broad-tailed's were feeding, ALL FEMALES. At the feeders on the right side of
the building, about 30 Broad-tailed's were feeding, ALL MALES. This wasn't just
a momentary thing. I was there for about 45 minutes, and there were no
exceptions to the boy and girl Broad-tailed's feeding at separate locations. I
also saw a female Rufous at both the front and the right side. The Rufous
female on the right was the only female of either species that was eating with
the boys. In addition, a Rufous male had staked out a couple of feeders on the
left side of the restaurant. Other species were:
Cassin's Finch
Red Crossbill
Hairy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Pine Siskin.
I also stopped at Peaceful Valley Resort which was a disappointment. There were
a few hummingbird feeders, but just a handful of Broad-tailed Hummingbirds.
At home (6,000 feet, 1/2 way between Boulder & Lyons) yesterday, I had a male
Calliope Hummingbird in addition to Broad-tailed's and a male and female
Rufous. I also have a few Red Crossbills (type 2) that have been around for
several days.
On the way up to Allenspark I saw a ram, ewe and lamb bighorn sheep grazing
along side Highway 7 about 4 miles west of Lyons.
Also, the Kentucky Warbler was seen or heard briefly by four birders about 8:30
- 9:00 at Gregory Canyon this morning. Other birds included Prairie Falcon,
Brown Creeper, Dusky Flycatcher, Plumbeous Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Red-breasted
Nuthatch, Western Tanager, Yellow-breasted Chat, Western Wood-Pewee among
others. There is a jungle of poison ivy along the trails, so watch out.

Have the hummingbirds started to collect at the feeders at Fawn Brook Inn in
Allen's Park, Colorado yet?
