Dear Cobirders,
The Boulder Bird Club headed up to Caribou Open Space in Boulder
County yesterday to look for Ponderosa Pine specialties. Caribou Open
Space is best known as the recording location of the movie Stagecoach,
the Elton John album "Caribou" and its complete lack of Caribou. Good
weather and good morale allowed us to complete the 4.5 mile round-trip
hike. Notable "seen" birds included a scruffy looking male Red-naped
Sapsucker, Brewer's Sparrows, Lincoln's Sparrows, and Song Sparrows
and an out-of-place Double-crested Cormorant. Many birds were "heard-
only" providing an excellent opportunity to hone our ears; these
included Red Crossbills, Pine SIskins, House Wrens and the
aforementioned Sparrows. The wildflower bonanza also helped to
provide great looks at Hummingbirds feeding in the wild.
Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
