Hi CoBirders,

Early Saturday morning Frank and I birded one of the last places in old
USAF Lowry Field that has not been built up--yet. For the first time this
year, we found American Avocet here. What a surprise! These three birds
were at shallow ponds reached by walking a tire track that cuts across the
weedy vegetation covering much of this area. Other birds present, and usually
here, included Snowy Egrets, 5 today with 3 young ones, and 3 Common
Yellowthroats and many Red-winged Blackbirds singing from the cattails and low
willows along the narrow drainage ditch that runs by the main tire tracks.
Also: Western Meadowlarks, an American Goldfinch, Swainson's Hawk, Western
Meadowlarks, Western Kingbirds, and numerous juvenile and adult Killdeer
and Mallards. Cliff Swallow, now declining in numbers, are still nesting
under the small bridge over the drainage ditch.

The Spotted Sandpipers that have been here in increasing numbers since late
May, and have been nesting here, were hidden and quiet in the marshes, or
had left for the year. Other birds here this year include gull sp.,
Lesser Goldfinches, Yellow Warblers, Brewer's and Yellow-headed Blackbirds,
American White Pelicans, Eastern Kingbirds, Lesser Goldfinches, Mourning
Doves,
Rock Pigeons, Barn and Bank Swallows, cormorants, and crows. The most
unexpected birds we have found were a pair of Bewick's Wrens that for several
days hung around and often sang from the cottonwoods at the end of the main
track.

This small area is off Sports Boulevard, less than a quarter mile east of
Fairmont Boulevard, past the athletic fields and hangars. There is parking
on both sides of the bridge. Note that rats swim in the swift currents of
the drainage, and some may also be on land. Some of the area may also be
contaminated from materials used by the USAF.
