A brief walk through Running Deer and Cottonwood Hollow Natural Areas east of
Fort Collins provided several interesting encounters with birds, a reminder
that this season is extremely interesting for bird observers. Odd calls and the
briefly held juvernal plumage of many species are only observable during this
season. Of special note this morning:

Least Bittern - a female or immature flew from north to south above the level
of the cattails along the east shore of Cottonwood Hollow pond (the large pond
on the south side of Prospect Road)

Green Heron - a calling bird flew south from this pond, FOS for me, but viewed
regularly by others

Virginia Rail - a juvenile in the open

Sora - flying over the cattails, showing narrow white patagial patches

No need to wait til spring to find "good" birds.
