I just spent three days backpacking in the Rawah Wilderness (Medicine Bow Range
west of Fort Collins). I camped at a site I have used nearly every summer for
16 years, located at about 10,500 feet of altitude. I have never missed seeing
Pine Grosbeak at this site, until this past weekend. There were none seen or
heard. It is possible that they were deep in nesting mode right now and not
giving themselves away. But I wonder if they have started to move out of the
area because of the extent of the beetle kill. Approximately half of the trees
in this area are now brown, and I suspect the remainder are infected this year
and will be brown by next summer. Does anyone have any information on how
beetle kill has affected Pine Grosbeak in other areas?
