While not easy to find, we got a couple of nice looks at the male
least bittern at Artist's Point, Cottonwood Hollow this morning (8/2)
between 7:45 and 8:30. Thanks to everyone who posted for helping us
find this lifer!

We were facing west from the sign that points north to Artist's Point
when we first saw the bird fly north over the water. My wife found it
in a tree about six feet off the ground - really an incredible find as
it was very well camouflaged! It flew south, we went back to the sign
and waited 20 minutes or so, when it flew north again. We did not see
the bird again. Walking south from Cottonwood Hollow, we also got
some nice looks at a green heron on a dead log in the water - nice to
compare to the earlier sights of the bittern!

Cottonwood Hollow also had a great egret, numerous great blue herons,
snowy egrets, double-crested cormorants, black-crowned night herons,
and wood ducks. I saw what looked like a sora briefly behind a snowy
egret. We also had several fly-bys from osprey and what looked like a
snipe. Oh yes, we saw more American goldfinches than I think I've
ever seen in one spot! All-in-all, really a lovely morning!

We also met a couple who said that, from the viewing platform just on
the south side of Prospect, a MINK came up and sniffed the woman's
feet! They got some nice pics!
