Hi Everyone--

Although we didn't have a mink sniffing our shoes, Marcia Marvin and I
nonetheless had a successful trip to Cottonwood Hollow today 8/2. We arrived
about 8:40, about the time everyone else was leaving. We spent the next hour
watching odonates (Widow Skimmers, Common Whitetails, and Painted Damsels
that we know of, and a very common golden-olive one that we did not
identify), and whatever birds we could find (Great Egret, Wood Ducks, and
Eastern Kingbirds, among others). At 9:40, the Least Bittern flew from the
north end of the pond down to the south end, giving us a good, long look.
Thanks to everyone who's been keeping track of it.

We then drove up Big Thompson Canyon and over to Allenspark. The seed
feeders had two young Red Crossbills (not sure what type, but 2 seems
reasonable given all the Ponderosa Pine around), and a few others flew over
(these sounded like type 2). There were lots of hummingbirds, but we could
find only Broad-tailed and Rufous. We also had a very tasty lunch there
(reservations required).
