I birded the far eastern section of the Canon City Riverwalk this morning where I saw 6-7 females/immatures and 1-2 empids (one was in the same location as the empid I saw day before yesterday). There were several Black-headed Grosbeaks in juvenal plumage and I saw a parent feeding one. I also saw an immature Indigo Bunting.
The family of Black Phoebes that were in the area of the MacKenzie bridge over the Arkansas River for several days has dispersed but at least one juvenile, now independent, remains. I watched it chase 2 large insects that were more skilled at evasive behavior than it was skilled at foraging though it made a valiant and extended attempt to catch them.
