Hello, Birders.

Well, the conditions were about as bad as can be: south winds, clear skies, and
a bright moon.

Nonetheless, 8 of us had a nice time earlier this "morning," Wednesday, August
12th, out at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County. Despite the moon, the Perseids
were good. They were scattered across the sky, but with the strongest
concentration in the east, from Auriga to Orion. Nocturnal migrants, however,
were pretty much non-existent. We heard none at all until 5:22, when a small
flock of Chipping Sparrows passed over; and at that "late" hour, they could
have been local birds just moving around in the dawn's early light.

Even though there were few if any migrants aloft, we got to hear other birds.
For example, the never-say-sleep Barn Swallows were twittering high overhead
the entire time we were out. Also, a pair of nearby Great Horned Owls performed
a great duet for the better part of half an hour.

We'll do it again next year. And here's the good news: No moon next year! See
ya at oh-dark-thirty on August 12th, 2010. In the meantime, check out the
