Hi cobirders.. Went to the Wheat Ridge Green Belt about 12:30PM to
2PM Friday August 14. I needed to get more
practice walking with my right foot boot and Rollater. Also wanted
to see damage done by the storm 2 weeks ago.
a commercial firm was cleaning up. All smaller trails were closed
because of damage. Only the paved trail and the
nature gravel trail were open. I went to Bass Lake and relaxed
there . Listened to a noisy bullfrog which did not show.
I watched a large black cormorant in the middle of the pond. It as up
for a few seconds and dove at least a dozen
times. It had a red patch on face and into gular patch. Its bill
smaller than D.C. and dark. Tail had many fringes.
Its neck was much heaver possibly not as long as Double -crested. A
Double -crested came in but didn't interact
soon flew to the east. the one I was watching circled around and went
low north.
A few years ago about the same time returning from checking the heron
Island in Tabor Lake I found two similar
Cormorants on the shore of Prospect in the sw corner near the outlet.
I will have to see if I made good notes.

We tend to ignore Cormorants unless they are 3/4 size. Sibley says
thse Cormorants like to be solo or in smaller
groups. I went Monday afternoon and did not relocate it but couldn't
check Tabor. Took camera this time.
So even at least likely time of day you find something rare.
