Have rarely seen black-crowned night-herons at Manitou Lake ($5 fee) in
northern Teller County over the last 21 years. (May/99, May/04, Apr/06,
Oct/06) This year I have seen a pair since May 3rd. Today, after watching
the adult pair fly around the marsh for a few minutes, I saw a fledgling
struggling to take flight and fly to the top of a nearby ponderosa! Neat!

The word of the day is fledglings. There were fledglings being fed by
parents everywhere and by many, many species. Highlight was getting to watch
the ever so secretive common yellowthroat parents never-ending trips to
their youngsters' open gapes with insects of all sorts. 40 species in all
seen at the lake. Many dozens of western bluebirds and yellow-rumped
warblers with imms. Brewers and chipping sparrows.

Also, plenty of band-tailed pigeons and evening grosbeaks at my feeders
daily. All with imms of the year. Along with the regular fanfare.
