A visit to Bolivia: It’s a thrilling account of 12 days and 429 species,
“despite civil unrest, road blockages and cancelled returning flights from La
Paz, we successfully covered Bolivia's topographic diversity and great variety
of habitats."

DFO Board Member, John Drummond, will talk about this amazing Bolivia trip on
August 24, 2009.  The trip included a number of DFO regulars who will also
likely be in attendance.

John will bring many pictures, including the endangered Red-fronted Macaw.

John and the birding groups recorded numerous regional endemics shared such as
Hooded Mountain-Toucan, Light-crowned Spinetail, Diademed Tapaculo,
Golden-collared Tanager, and Orange-browed Hemispingus. Others included
Blue-capped Puffleg, Rufous-bellied Saltator, and Citron-headed Yellow-Finch.
Twelve of the thirteen endemics were seen including marvelous views of the
endangered Red-fronted Macaw, Black-hooded Sunbeam, Cochabamba Mountain-Finch
and the Rufous-faced Antpitta (ext).  Other favorites during the main trip
included Greater Rhea , Andean Condor, Cliff Parakeet, Yungas Pygmy Owl,
Cream-backed Woodpecker, and Giant Conebill.

The lucky four birders on the extension trip managed to add Short-winged Grebe,
Scimitar-winged Piha (one of the rarest birds in South America),
Chestnut-crowned Cotinga, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, and Berlepsch’s Canastero.

John Drummond has birded in 27 countries, covering 6 continents.  John has been
a leader, co-leader or has advanced a number of international trips covering
Bolivia, Jamaica, Japan, Australia and Thailand.  John is a leader and member
of the Partnership for International Birding and serves on the Board of Denver
Field Ornithologists.  His birding plans in the near future include Columbia
and likely Indonesia.  His world bird list exceeds 6,500 species.  John has
Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Southampton University, England and has
extensive field experience on a number of bird studies and has spoken to a
number of Audubon and other ornithological groups.
