Hello, Birders. Maggie Boswell and I stopped at various spots along US-36 in eastern Colorado, during our drive out to the Fox Ranch on Friday afternoon, Aug. 21st. Here's what we found: Byers (Arapahoe County). 1 Lewis's Woodpecker. Roadside playa at milepost 130 (just east of the Arapahoe/Washington county line). 24 Baird's Sandpipers. Last Chance (Washington County). 1 tame Northern Waterthrush. Also 1 Wllow Flycatcher, 1 Dusky Flycatcher, 1 "Western" Flycatcher, and 2 glorious male Lazuli Buntings defiling themselves in the foul slime at the bottom of the pit. We also had a sighting of the ever-peripatetic Dave Leatherman. Cope "City" "Park" (Washington County). 1 Red-headed Woodpecker, 2 semaphoric Eastern Hair Woodpeckers, and 1 Dusky Flycatcher. Burnidge Playa (Yuma County). This site is squeezed into the northwest corner of the intersection of US-36 and CR-T; dangerous access from the highway. Anyhow, the playa, several acres in extent, had Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope, a few Eared Grebes and hundreds of Green-winged Teals. Worth keeping an eye on in the weeks to come... -------------------------------
