Two of yesterday's posts referred to mimicry by Lesser Goldfinches. Mike
Henwood wonders if the Bear Creek Lake Bobwhite calls issue from the little
mimic, and Jeff Jones mentions extensive mimicry in El Paso County.

Two comments: sometimes the mimicked bird doesn't occur locally; perhaps
the goldfinches pick up some sounds during the winter and store them up for
summer singing.

Here in Franktown Urling and I recorded the mimicked species, and found
that the goldfinches imitated some but not others.

Intrigued with this phenomenon, I collected observations from six other
Colorado birders and, in CFO's journal, Colorado Birds, for April 2004, listed
25 species imitated in Colorado. See Colorado Birds 58(2): 59-62. I invite
others to add to the list -- I'm sure it's not comprehensive. I started a
supplementary list after that, but few observers responded. Maybe now?
