On the way back to Cortez from the Sand Canyon trailhead this evening, we
encountered several uncommon birds. The first were a sage thrasher on Road N
and an early-season (although not the first) merlin.
On Road S to the north and east, we found an irrigated pasture with spotted
sandpipers and at least two tiny peeps - least and western — and maybe a
third. The same pasture had a couple dozen killdeer, at least one
semipalmated plover who was clearly not a killdeer, and numerous Wilson's
snipe. The snipe seem to have been especially prolific this year.

Closer to town, we happened on to a fairly cooperative Virginia rail and one
chick, still a flightless black fuzzball.
