Dear Cobirders,
Given a decent run through my books and a listen to birdsong on the
internet, I realized that my unidentified passerine was a Field
Sparrow. This individual was about 200 yards south of the Dowdy Draw
parking lot where a small wooden fence that runs east from the trail
indicates "Habitat restoration area" The Sparrow was initially in the
bush growing under this fence and later flew quite a bit father east
across the valley floor. It was joined by another bird on the other
side of the valley, which could have been another Field Sparrow, but I
didn't get a close look at the second bird. The original Sparrow was
sub-singing, mostly the latter part of the bouncing ball song and also
calling. Good Luck to folks heading out this way this morning.

Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
